THE B-STARS

The B-Stars are a San Francisco-based country band that stirs up a hearty stew of honky tonk and hillbilly hits for your listening and dancing pleasure. With nods to the country and western stars of the late 1940s and 1950s, these sharp-suited jukebox honky tonkers will be singin’ and swingin’ ‘til the break of dawn.

The B-Stars began in late 2005 when Greg Yanito moved from his native Ohio roots to San Francisco and teamed up with upright bassist Eric Reedy to dust off old forgotten hillbilly songs. In the process, Mikiya Matsuda and Billy “JL” Zelinski jumped on board, and the band began to bring to life original material that not only tells a story, but sits comfortably right alongside the country music from the middle of the 20th Century. With two strong songwriters and a a few generations worth of musical experience, The B-Stars started off on a mission to get the dance floors jumpin’ with that western boogie beat. What has come out of that mission straddles the line between jazz and country western music pioneered by the likes of Lefty Frizzell, Carl Smith, Hank Penny, Tommy Duncan, Bob Wills, and of course the great Hank Williams Sr.

The current lineup features two lead vocalists, acoustic rhythm guitar, steel and electric guitar, a slappin’ gut stringed upright bass, and a swingin’ drummer, to establish a minimal but complete country combo. With a debut album produced by Lee Jeffriess, the steel guitar master behind Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, and three consecutive appearances at Viva Las Vegas, The B-Stars have begun to establish an international audience that just can’t get enough of that hillbilly beat!

“He can do no wrong…soulful, heartfelt vocals and exquisite, stellar guitar. An inspired blend of blues, R&B, soul and roadhouse rock” –Blues Revue

Ever since he first picked up a guitar, Tommy Castro believed. He believed he would not only be able to make a living playing music, but could develop his own signature sound, fusing blues with R&B and roots rock ‘n’ roll. And he has done just that. Castro began his career playing in local Bay Area cover bands prior to joining the nationally touring R&B party band, The Dynatones. Since forming his own band and relentlessly touring the world, he has become one of the blues’ top drawing artists and best-loved performers, known worldwide for his impassioned vocals, forceful guitar work, striking songwriting and galvanizing live show. Castro’s contagious, boyish energy and his uncanny ability to connect one-on-one with his fans – who often travel great distances to watch him play — have made him and his horn-fueled band among the blues world’s busiest, most popular acts.

Connecting with his audience and sharing his enthusiasm with his fans is something Castro does naturally and effortlessly. With his horn-fueled, blues-rocking, road-tested band behind him, Castro never fails to sweep his audience out of their seats and onto the dance floor. His ability to ignite a raucous good-time party – along with the recent CDs Hard Believer and Tommy Castro Presents The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue – Live! – assure that Tommy Castro and his band are in constant demand. Listening to Castro’s recordings and seeing him live, believing is not only easy, it’s a whole lot of fun.

KATHI McDONALD

Kathi McDonald's voice is so riveting, people take notice even when she isn't the main attraction. In fact, the strength of her voice is what landed the vocalist her first big professional gig when she was attending a concert and joined in as part of the audience. McDonald's powerful voice drew Ike Turner's notice in a club called the Winterland, and he invited the aspiring singer to his and Tina Turner's next rehearsal. McDonald had snagged a spot in the Ikettes, the Turners' backing group, without even trying. It was a heady and magical beginning for someone who never had any formal lessons.

She currently performs with Kathi McDonald & Friends. She has appeared on an extensive list of rock and blues albums and toured extensively with Long John Baldry prior to his death. She and Baldry enjoyed pop success in Australia where their duet "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" reached No. 2 in 1980. Kathi was born in Anacortes, Washington and resides in the Seattle Washington state area but still has strong San Francisco music connections. In February 2009 she performed at the opening gala for the San Francisco Museum of Performance & Design along with Sam Andrews. Welcoming in a new museum dedicated to the art and music of San Francisco of the 1965-1975 era.

THE PULSATORS

"This band has a HUGE sound...lots of horns and keyboard will blow our ears off!"- Loreen Eliason / Riverwood Inn

=================

The Pulsators formed in 1989 and released four albums over the following years. Their first CD, titled THE PULSATORS, prompted a Northern California music magazine to call them “one killer band with irresistible hooks.” The Press Democrat’s “On Q” responded to the second album, HERE’S TO YOU, with “this firecracker band proves it’s only getting better with time,” adding that The Pulsators reproduce “the hyper essence of their live shows, along with a tight professional musicianship”. The Petaluma Argus-Courier wrote that the album “captures the easy groove and good-time feeling that the band projects.”

Rooted in the fertile musical soil of the Sonoma County Wine Country the Pulsators are a five piece band that plays its own brand of music. With a get-up-and-dance kind of orchestration, their music has been defined as a spicy blend of driving blues, New Orleans-funky R&B, rock steady reggae and rock-and-roll. Their music supports an ever-growing legion of faithful fans who keep coming back for more. The Pulsators have been voted a Sonoma County fan-favorite four times in reader's choice polls given by The Press Democrat. In the Bohemian's music poll they won best rock band in 2009.

"I've been knowin' Johnny and these cats for a long time. They sound as good as me! I always knew they were cold blooded and throwin' bricks. Check these dude's out!" Art Neville NOLA

SISTA MONICA

Monica Parker, affectionately known as Sista Monica Parker, "the lioness of the blues" recently gained national TV placement of her music on the Fox channel. Her original song "Show Me What You're Working With" was on the hit show "So You Think You Can Dance" finale show August 11, 2011.

Sista Monica was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. At the age of 7, she began putting down her gospel roots, singing and touring with her Great Band Missionary Baptist church gospel choir. This early exposure to gospel music stuck with her. But it wasn't until later that Monica turned this early love of music into her life's calling - and most recently - her redeemer. At the age of 12, Monica started participating in the choir's mini-tours between Gary, Chicago and Detroit.

In 1992, after seeing her former neighbor Stanley Burrell (a.k.a. M.C. Hammer), perform on the Arsenio Hall Show, Monica decided to turn her singing talent into more than just performing in her automobile and bathroom. Already accustomed to hard work and discipline, she set up her garage to make a living performing the music inside her. Almost immediately, she was sharing the Monterey Bay Blues Festival stages with Etta James, Gladys Knight, The Neville Brothers, Koko Taylor, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and other greats from the world of blues and R&B. She has now recorded over 9 CD's.

Because of her distinct voice and compelling story, she is invited to sing and perform public speaking engagements worldwide. Sista Monica performs with more conviction, passion, energy and power. She has expanded her musical career to include her veteran blues band, and the development of a 50 voice gospel workshop choir. She performs festivals, weddings, corporate events, in nursing homes, hospitals, and diverse spiritual communities. The Sista is a show stopper! Monica sings and leads her band towards the type of events that allow her to impact audiences. She makes a favorable difference and lifts the spirit with her blues, soul and gospel music.

THE CROW QUILL NIGHT OWLS

"The WHO you ask? That's what I first thought! This band sort of blew through in August 2010.  I didn't know what to expect.  It was a Tuesday night and I thought, 'What the hell?'  When they started playing, I thought WHAT THE HELL!!!  A mix of jub band, crusty metal and Swedish punk........I didn't quite understand what they were about, but I've waited nearly two years to get them back!!!"- Loreen Eliason / Riverwood Inn

Bio From their Facebook page:

Kit "Stymee" Stovepipe and Windy City Alex met a few years back. They where both playing in bands, Kit in the Inkwell Rhythm Makers, and Alex in Below the Salt.

They both shared an interest in old music, silent films, drawing comix, staying up all night and each other. They began singing in the bath tub and hunting for old 78's and antique sewing machines together. Sooner than later, old tenor ...banjos started to appear, and thanks to a Mr. Lucas Hicks, one stayed.

The universe swirled around dangerously and feirce, like wine rushing through the esophagus of a serpent eating it's own tale, stacked on the backs of turtle shells. Feet slid on bannanna peels clear across the room. Wool clouds where violet, pink and crimson.... bobbing like carrots fastened with twine. The therory of reletivity broke down like an old engine on rusty tracks, and banged it's way through past the letter "Z", and started poking around. Right went left, horrizontal went sideways... night turned to day... and the two peered out at the dawning of this strange and familiar dream, with crooked teeth, and fingers stained in india ink. After that , they began playing music together pretty much all the time.

Not much time went by before the two of them started playing music with their buddies Shannon & Matt. then they met the Gallus Brothers and started playing music with them too. All of a sudden, wash Rag Joe from the Inkwell Rhythm Makers was back! And folks just kept commin'! Asher, Stale Bread Scottie, Hans, Fiddlin' Mike, Eerie Shiri, Shaney, Annie Ford, and many more!

So altho there is no steady band, there is a rotating cast of musicians and friends we play and tour with... altho (ahem) a steady band would be helpful when it comes to booking tours guys (ahem)...

RUSTY EVANS & THE RING OF FIRE (Johnny Cash Tribute Band)

Rockabilly Hall of Famer, Rusty Evans and his band Ring of Fire have been burning up the California festival circuit with his rollicking tribute to country music icon Johnny Cash.

With a voice of rolling thunder and a spirit like gentle rain Rusty has been wowing audiences from Nashville to San Francisco with his stunning tribute to the “Man In Black”. His weighted drawl doles out molasses-coated syllables, putting an upbeat spin on less than optimistic situations. Lending his own touch to world famous songs Rusty honors the Man in Black with soulful honesty and exuberance.

Driving rhythms on his amplified acoustic Martin guitar are augmented by his energetic three-piece band Ring of Fire. A hot rockin' lead guitar, driving bass and drums create the powerful and irresistible Johnny Cash signature sound, a pulse that drives folks right to the dance floor. People often comment on how much Rusty actually looks like the Man in Black!

CANDYE KANE

Candye Kane has been called a survivor, a superhero and the toughest girl alive. (All are also titles of her self-penned songs.) They are apt descriptions of the jump blues singer, songwriter and mother of two from East Los Angeles who has earned this moniker the hard way.

Nominated for five National Blues Foundation Awards (Best Contemporary Blues Female 2011) winner of ten San Diego Music Awards, starring in a sold out stage play about her life and beating down pancreatic cancer in the last two years, Kane is one tough cookie. She has performed worldwide for presidents and movie stars but her path to success was not always glamorous or easy.

Raised in a dysfunctional, blue-collar family, Candye became a teenage mother, a pin up cover girl and a punk rock, hillbilly and blues-belting anarchist by the time she was just 21 years old. Ten cds, six record labels, millions of international road miles and countless awards later, Miss Kane has proven to be a true survivor as she scrambled her way to the top of the roots music heap, creating a world renowned reputation that has spanned two decades.

GUITAR SHORTY

Legendary guitarist/vocalist Guitar Shorty is a giant in the blues world. Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Guitar Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings. Like a bare knuckled boxer, Shorty strikes with his blistering, physical guitar playing and his fierce vocals, connecting directly with body and soul. What really sets Shorty apart is his absolutely unpredictable, off-the-wall guitar playing. He reaches for sounds, riffs and licks that other blues players wouldn't even think of.

Amazon.com says his guitar work "sounds like a caged tiger before feeding time. His molten guitar pours his psychedelicized solos like lava over anything in his path." The Chicago Reader declares, "Guitar Shorty is a battle-scarred hard-ass. He slices off his phrases and notes with homicidal fury. He is among the highest-energy blues entertainers on the scene."
